1990 Barcelona

ROC Winner     Stig Blomqvist
ROC Finalist     Tommi Mäkinen
ROC Semi-Finalists     Sainz And Cerrato

The third Race Of Champions saw another change of venue, with a move to Barcelona, to the heart of the Olympic Centre on the mountain of Montjuic.

It was the first appearance by Carlos Sainz in front of his adoring Spanish public since securing the 1990 World Rally Championship title. Unfortunately he could not add the ‘Champion of Champions’ title to his others as he was beaten byStig Blomqvist in the semi-final.

There was no shame in that however, as his Swedish conqueror won the event for the second year running, beating the revelation of the year, a young Finn called Tommi Mäkinen, in the final.

This year also saw the first running of the International Rally Masters. The competition was designed to offer one of the season’s best drivers, who had not yet won a championship title, the chance to win a place in The Race of Champions. The event’s first winner proved to be Swede, Kenneth Eriksson, while Tommi Mäkinen also qualified for The Race of Champions and subsequently went all the way to the final.
