Tom Kristensen to compete at 2010 Race of Champions
Le Mans great Tom Kristensen has signed up for the 2010 Race Of Champions, to be held at Düsseldorf’s ESPRIT arena on November 27-28.
The annual end-of-season competition brings together the world’s greatest drivers from motor sport’s most prestigious disciplines and pits them head-to-head in identical machinery. Now Kristensen has joined a driver roll call that already includes seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, four-time F1 world champion Alain Prost, six-time world rally champion Sébastien Loeb and 2010 F1 title contender Sebastian Vettel.
Denmark’s Kristensen is acknowledged as the finest endurance racer in motor sport history. At last week’s Le Mans 24-Hour race, the eight-time winner took yet another podium finish. Kristensen has also competed at every Race of Champions since 2001, reaching the Grand Final in 2005. The same year he won the ROC Nations Cup for Scandinavia alongside Sweden’s Mattias Ekström.
Kristensen said: “I really enjoy competing in The Race of Champions. I have regularly taken part since it was held in the Canary Islands and seen first-hand how it has developed into a major global sports event. The organisation is always very relaxed, but professional. Drivers from Formula 1, Le Mans, NASCAR, DTM, WRC and more – having a good time jumping into and driving very different types of fast cars makes for a fantastic atmosphere.
“I’m delighted that the event is coming to central Germany this year – and I’m sure a lot of my Danish motor sport friends will take the opportunity to spend a weekend in Düsseldorf to see the atmosphere up close. My Audi colleagues and I were very happy on the podium at the Le Mans 24-Hour race last week – and it would be fantastic to celebrate with a good result in The Race of Champions at the very end of the season.”
The Race of Champions has been staged every year since 1988, founded by IMP President Fredrik Johnsson and Michèle Mouton, the world’s most successful female rally driver. This year’s event will take place on a specially constructed tarmac circuit with two parallel lanes winding their way round Düsseldorf’s ESPRIT arena.
Johnsson said: “We’re thrilled that Tom will return to The Race of Champions in 2010. He is a true champion who has dominated his field of motor sport – and he always entertains the crowds when he’s let loose inside a stadium.”
Tickets are now available from the brand new, updated website www.raceofchampions.com with prices starting at 29 Euros.
