Nelson Piquet Jr secured the major title that he had long craved when he won the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship in 2014-2015.
To win the world’s first major event for electric cars, the Brazilian driver saw off an impressive line-up including many former stars of Formula 1. He took victories at Long Beach and Moscow before sealing his triumph by a single point after a dramatic charge through the field at the last race in London’s Battersea Park.
The son of three-time Formula 1 world champion of the same name, Nelson Piquet Jr was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1985. He made his karting debut eight years later before switching to Formula 3 in 2001, winning the South American title and becoming the youngest British F3 champion in 2004 aged just 19. He went on to similar success in GP2, finishing as runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in 2006.
Piquet Jr competed in Formula 1 in 2008 and 2009, reaching the podium at the 2008 German Grand Prix with second place. He has since become the first Brazilian to win a top tier NASCAR race in the Nationwide meeting at Road America in 2012 and the first Brazilian to take a race victory in the Global Rallycross Championship, in Washington DC in 2015.
Piquet Jr made his first Race Of Champions appearance in 2005, reaching the quarter-finals of the racing section at the Stade de France in Paris. He also partnered Felipe Massa for Team Brazil in the ROC Nations Cup, a duo reunited in 2015.
