Daniel Ricciardo set the motor racing world alight in 2014 with three victories – in Canada, Hungary and Belgium – following his move to the Red Bull F1 team. The impressive performances took him to third place in the drivers’ world championship. In doing so he also saw off the challenge of his illustrious team-mate, four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel, who subsequently moved to Ferrari.

Born in Perth to parents of Italian ancestry, Ricciardo began his racing career in Western Australian Formula Ford before taking third place in the Formula BMW Asian series in 2006. After moving to Europe, Ricciardo competed in series including Formula BMW, Formula Renault 2.0, Formula Three (where he won the British title in 2009) and the Formula Renault 3.5 series.

Ricciardo made his F1 debut at the 2011 British Grand Prix racing for the short-lived Hispania Racing Team. He soon switched to Toro Rosso where he spent two seasons before his move to the senior Red Bull team.

The Australian also posted the fastest lap by an F1 driver in Top Gear’s ‘reasonably priced car’ with a mark of 1m 42.2s in 2015, setting him up nicely for his Race Of Champions debut at London’s former Olympic Stadium.

It will be very different to what I’m used to in Formula 1 but I can’t wait to try out ROC’s wide range of cars in quick succession. It looks like a serious challenge but I’m ready for anything.
