overview
The final line-up for the 1996 Race Of Champions saw the winners of the two previous events paired against one another in the form of François Delecour (1995 winner) and Didier Auriol (1993 and 1994 winner). This time it was Auriol who emerged victorious, finishing ahead of his fellow countryman in both the first two heats of a best-of-three final.
To reach the final Auriol had first beaten European Rally Champion, Armin Schwarz in the quarter-finals and then defeated crowd favourite, Carlos Sainz in the semi, having gone one down but come back to win the next two heats to beat the Spaniard.
Delecour had accumulated the considerable scalps of Juha Kankkunen and Colin McRae on his way to the final.
The International Rally Masters Event was won for the second time by Spaniard, Flavio Alonso, also a winner in 1992.
