The event’s first running on a brand new circuit in Telde (near Las Palmas), Gran Canaria, saw Andrea Aghini beat Colin McRae in the final, watched by over 20,000 excited locals.
Aghini had disappointed the crowd by defeating their favourite Carlos Sainz in the semi-final, whilst Colin McRae had finished in front of Juha Kankkunen to set up a showdown against Aghini.
The Spaniards did have some reason to celebrate however, with Flavio Alonso victorious in the International Rally Masters, having qualified by virtue of winning the Spanish Masters.
This year also saw the addition of the Canarias Masters to The Race Of Champions event line-up.
